They say to never play the comparison game, but as humans it’s hard to avoid. This is especially true when it comes to financial matters. So what do you do when your neighbor mentions their roofing quote and you find that yours is more than theirs was? Does that mean your contractor is scamming you or is there something else at play here? Actually, there are several factors that could impact the cost of your roof. Here are some things to consider before jumping to the conclusion that you’ve been scammed.
Size of the Roof
What size of roof does your neighbor have compared to yours? If their home is smaller, there’s a good bet their roof quote will also be smaller. This is, of course, because it takes less material in order to replace their roof. A good roofer will perform an inspection on site first to take exact measurements of your roof, and that will be reflected in your quote. If it wasn’t, you’d be in for a surprise at the end of the project!
Most roofers offer multiple roofing materials. A slate roof will cost considerably more money than an asphalt shingle roof, for instance, though it will be more durable, fire resistant, and it’s probably more likely to raise your home value than asphalt shingles. When it comes to roofing materials, you get what you pay for, and your neighbor may wish they’d invested in something stronger as time goes on.
Time of Year
Did your neighbor have their roof replaced in winter? Sometimes in winter, roofers are able to get discounts on material, which allows them to charge their customers less. Even if it’s not particularly winter, the roofer may have been offering some kind of special deal at the time that your neighbor had their roof replaced, and this would explain the discrepancy between your roof quotes.
Quality of Roofer
Finally, it may simply be that your neighbor went with a cheaper roofer. But just like roofing materials, you often get what you pay for. A quality roofer may charge a little more for their excellence, but you’re less likely to need their services again, because they’ll do the job right the first time.
