How to Spot an Untrustworthy Roofing Company

When searching for roofers in Fort Myers, Florida, trust is key.

Roofing is no easy project, and it can become quite a trial if you find yourself in a contract with a roofing company that you feel uncomfortable with. Whether it’s cheap materials, poor service, or shady business methods, every homeowner prefers to avoid that sort of situation altogether. Fortunately, there are ways to spot a less than trustworthy roofer from the beginning. Here are a few signs that might spell a bad roofing company.

Lack of References

In a best case scenario, a lack of references points to an inexperienced roofer. Often, however, this hints at a bigger problem. If a roofing company’s customers have positive things to say about them, they’ll be sure to display that prominently on their website and will certainly offer those references and testimonials upon request. If they don’t have references to offer, it may be that their customers don’t have much good to say about them, rather than that they have nothing to say about them at all.

Whole Cost Upfront

Another bad sign is when a roofer asks for the cost of the roof work upfront — or even half the cost of the roof work. In fact, this is often a scam, in which roofers demand money upfront and then disappear, never finishing the work. Even if they do finish the work, why would you pay full price before you know what the quality will be? A good roofer will never ask for money until the job is finished to your satisfaction.

Storm Chasers

One of the most common types of roofing scams is that of storm chasers. These roofers show up immediately after a bad storm, offering free roof inspections, in which they almost always find something that will cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to replace. Again, they’ll encourage you to make a large payment upfront, and then you may never hear from them again. Even if you do hear from them again, it doesn’t bode well for their business practices or reputation that they feel the need to seek out clients themselves, and especially right after a storm. A trustworthy roofer will have a trustworthy reputation that speaks for itself.
